As Cestrians ourselves, we want you to love our city as much as we do!

That's why we've put together a list of all our favourite things to do and places to eat and drink!

To Do

  • In Chester itself you can walk along the famous Rows above the shops and you can also do a walk around the Roman walls surrounding the city centre. There are other Roman sites you can go and see such as the Amphitheatre and the Roman Gardens.

 

  • You can also walk down by the River Dee and also cross to the other side to walk along the meadows.

  • The Tourist Information has many tours of Chester - we recommend the ghost tour!

​

  • The New Chester Market has lots of shops, food stalls and a bar and is dog friendly.

​

  • Rooftop Social is a new space with a pop up bars, restaurants and games

 

  • There are lots of shops in Chester, and if you have a car you can also drive to Cheshire Oaks designer outlet village.

 

  • Chester Zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium are both a short drive/taxi away but we would recommend you book if you want to go!

 

  • Keep an eye out for open air theatre and moonlight flick events in Chester. Also be sure to check out the Storyhouse Theatre website to see what is on!

There are so many great independent restaurants in Chester. All are located in the centre unless otherwise stated. In no particular order...

  • Chef's Table/Twenty Eight - Sister restaurants next to each other. Fine dining but good value at lunch, in the Michelin guide!

  • Salt House Tapas - beautifully refined tapas, beautiful restaurant

  • Porta - Great tapas in beautiful traditional setting

  • Covino - Small plates, fine dining, in the Michelin guide!

  • Maray - Middle Eastern small plates

  • Jolly Gardener (just outside of town, same owners as Porta, very good small plate style pub food)

  • Champagne+Fromage - sister of its restaurant in Covent Garden.

  • Stile Napoletano - The very best pizza restaurant, ranked as one of the best in Europe!

  • Ruan Orchid - Great Thai

  • Siam - Thai, same family as above

  • Russell's Thai Tapas - Thai small plates

  • Thai Baan - Thai street food, same owners as Russell's above

  • Amni - More fancy Indian, family run

  • Dabba - Casual South Indian food, family run

  • Barton Rouge - Good Indian

  • Hamayuu - Japanese independent restaurant

  • The Greenhouse - small plates, really nice menu, family run

  • Death by Tacos - Casual, incredible Mexican food and cocktails, death metal!

  • Pars Kahve - Independent Bazaar style Turkish restaurant

  • Mowgli Street Food - Amazing authentic Indian in Cheshire Oaks

  • La Brasserie/The Arkle (Chester Grosvenor Hotel) - the Brasserie is more reasonably priced. The Arkle is a tasting menu with a Michalin star!

  • Chez Jules - French family run, hearty meals

  • La Fattoria - Casual, family run Italian

  • The Old Harkers Arms - Gastro pub, great food and ale

  • The Architect - Gastro pub, great food and ale, same company as above. Located with a view over the racecourse, great beer garden

  • The Grosvenor Arms - same as above, located 10-15 minutes out of Chester in the Cheshire countryside

  • The White Horse at Churton - located close to the Grosvenor Arms (above), same company as Sticky Walnut (below) - very good food!

  • Sticky Walnut - Fine dining located in Hoole (suburb just outside the centre)

  • Upstairs at the Grill - Premium steak restaurant for a special occasion!

  • Moules a Go-Go - Family run bistro specialising in Moules frites but also does lots of other good food!

  • Carbonara - Italian, family run

  • The Sandbar - Seafood restaurant, same owners as the Seafood Shack in the Market.

  • The New Chester Market - lots of food stalls, shops, cafes and a bar (particularly recommend the Seafood Shack and the fresh pasta bar)

  • Rooftop Social - food stalls, bars, games

  • Take a walk along Watergate Street, Northgate Street and Bridge Street for lots of lovely independent restaurants and coffee shops (Jaunty Goat - great coffee!)

Dog Friendly

  • There are lots of dog friendly venues in Chester. Here are just some of the options.

  • It is definitely worth asking other restaurants/cafes though as it is surprising how many are allow dogs!

  • A lot of the shops in Chester are also dog friendly (just ask as you walk in), and almost all the shops at Cheshire Oaks are too!
